CNC MACHINIST

Join the Starbase team advancing SpaceX's mission to make humanity multiplanetary. Located at our South Texas site, this role supports tight-tolerance machining for critical infrastructure. The team develops high-performance flight and launch hardware, including systems for rapid and reliable rocket operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Program, set, and operate multi-axis (up to 5-axis) computer numerical control (CNC) mills and lathes
  • Inspect parts using tools to verify dimensions
  • Execute machining operations from blueprints, drawings, or verbal instructions on complex, tight-tolerance across various materials
  • Meet productivity expectations
  • Communicate production issues to shop leadership
  • Provide continuous feedback for process improvements
  • Cross-train in other lab operations (e.g., fixture build, testing support) as needed

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of experience in setup, operation, and/or programming of CNC mills and lathes

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in basic G-Code, including adjustments to feeds/speeds
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), notes, and tolerances
  • Experience using hand inspection tools to verify machined features
  • Familiarity with multiple CNC controls (e.g., Haas, Fanuc, Siemens) and programming software (e.g., Mastercam or similar)
  • Experience machining various materials (e.g., Inconel, stainless steel, copper, titanium)
  • Experience with lineboring and flange facing machines
  • Willingness to cross-train in other lab operations (e.g., fixture/test build, testing support)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Must be available for overtime and weekends as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required
  • Typical hours for this position excluding overtime are 6:00 pm – 6:00 am
  • Stand: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Sit: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Push/Pull: Up to 75lbs. (unassisted) between 1 to 2 hours per day
  • Overhead reach: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Walk: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Lift/Carry: Up to ≤ 50 lbs. (unassisted) between 1 to 2 hours per day
  • Climb (ladder/stairs): Up to 6 hours per day
  • Kneel/Crouch: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Upper body twist: Up to 6 hours per day
  • Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees 6 hours or greater per day
  • Candidate must be capable of safely working at heights (up to 500ft), in confined spaces, operating heavy equipment and machinery, and performing the physical requirements of the job listed in the job description. Candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical to confirm these capabilities, which may include a medical history review.
