CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT – WELDING (STARBASE)

As a Construction Superintendent focused on welding at Starbase, you will own the day-to-day execution of field welding activities for fluid systems and infrastructure projects at Massey's test site. This role directs contractors, plans and sequences weld work, and delivers high-quality, safe, and efficient installations in a fast-paced test and operations environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own day-to-day execution of welding projects on site
  • Lead site logistics and operations for welding projects, including scheduling, progress tracking, quality control, and resource allocation
  • Manage SpaceX construction asset material deliveries, storage, and site cleanliness to support welding activities
  • Maintain construction barricades and the site stormwater pollution prevention plan for welding work areas
  • Perform daily field coordination, conflict resolution, and schedule management for welding contractors and internal teams
  • Oversee procurement and execution of welding construction projects
  • Develop cost estimates, solicit bids, award contracts, and manage budget, schedule, and scope for weld packages
  • Track progress, provide daily updates, and coordinate with end users and facilities teams on welding scopes
  • Manage night shift weld contractors as required
  • Directly supervise welders and fitters, set daily priorities, and drive productivity and accountability
  • Plan and sequence welding work to align with the project schedule and operational constraints
  • Identify and resolve blockers early for welding scopes, including material access and engineering issues
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all welding activities between contractors, engineering, and SpaceX teams
  • Resolve field issues in real time for welding scopes, including fit-up interferences and design gaps
  • Ensure all welds, fit-ups, and installations meet SpaceX quality standards
  • Review drawings, isometric diagrams, and field changes for welding constructability
  • Manage contractor badging and security access for welding personnel
  • Proactively adjust welding operations to meet deadlines and escalate issues to engineering and project management as needed
  • Assist with hands-on skilled trade work on welding scopes when required (approximately 10% of the time)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of professional experience in the construction or aerospace industries, with experience leading or coordinating a labor force
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with a construction trade skill

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Structural welding experience on large-scale industrial or aerospace projects
  • Experience estimating labor hours and managing budgets for welding scopes
  • Strong field experience managing weld contractors, fitters, and multi-disciplinary crews in fast-paced technical environments
  • Ability to read and interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams, isometric drawings, fabrication drawings, and redlines
  • Experience with fit-up, system tie-ins, modifications, and resolving constructability issues in the field
  • Solid understanding of weld quality requirements, visual inspection, and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods (including radiographic testing)
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Experience coordinating work around active test and operations environments
  • Current CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) certification

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work multiple shifts and change shifts with minimal notice; flexibility required
  • Ability to travel to different sites, as needed, up to 20% travel
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting the upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings, and climbing hand-over-hand
  • Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Stand: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Sit: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Push/Pull: Up to 75lbs. (unassisted) between 1 to 2 hours per day
  • Overhead reach: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Walk: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Lift/Carry: Up to ≤ 50 lbs. (unassisted) between 1 to 2 hours per day
  • Climb (ladder/stairs): Up to 6 hours per day
  • Kneel/Crouch: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Upper body twist: Up to 6 hours per day
  • Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees for 6 hours or greater per day
  • Candidate must be capable of safely working at heights (up to 500ft), in confined spaces, operating heavy equipment and machinery, and performing the physical requirements of the job listed in the job description. Candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical to confirm these capabilities, which may include a medical history review.
