MANUFACTURING ENGINEER, AVIONICS (STARSHIP)

The Starship Avionics Manufacturing Engineer role is responsible for supporting avionics manufacturing and test of wire harnessing, electro-mechanical hardware, and other avionics system components to rapidly build Starship vehicles. Manufacturing Engineers will be responsible for continuous improvement and innovation to achieve high-quality and high-rate throughput. Successful candidates will have previously demonstrated extreme ownership in simplifying, innovating, or otherwise improving products and/or production lines and processes, and will be highly motivated to send humanity permanently to the moon and Mars.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide end-to-end ownership of high-rate avionics production line design, bring-up, operations, and improvements
  • Perform hands-on design for manufacturability engineering as part of the product development cycle and act as primary liaison between the design and production teams
  • Responsible for avionics part manufacturability and introduction into high-rate manufacturing environment
  • Contribute to design reviews acting as an expert in design for manufacturability, design for testability, yield improvements, supplier assessments, quality control, etc.
  • Act as primary point of contact for non-conforming product, troubleshooting, root cause, failure investigations and corrective actions
  • Lead the initial supply chain development for cable and connector development
  • Own the design and validation of fixtures, tooling, and new technology that is introduced to the production line.
  • Prepare engineering documentation necessary for the transition from development to production including assembly procedures, test procedures, standard operating procedures, schematic diagrams, bills of materials, suitable alternate parts lists and mechanical drawings
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts of established production lines and products
  • Perform structured root cause analysis of in-process failures

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace, or manufacturing engineering
  • 1+ years of experience in design, manufacturing, and/or production of mechanical or electrical hardware systems (internship and collegiate extracurricular engineering project experience will be considered)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years of professional experience in high-rate design and/or production of mechanical or electronics hardware systems
  • Experience transitioning products from design to manufacturing as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced iterative design environments
  • Experience modeling with 3D CAD software such as: NX/Unigraphics, Catia, Solidworks
  • Basic competency with SQL databases
  • Demonstrated experience designing tooling in a manufacturing environment
  • Hands-on experience with a passion for continuous improvement
  • Experience in a fast-paced, iterative design environment within the consumer electronics, mobile handset, medical devices, aerospace, marine or automotive industries.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Willing to work weekends and extended hours as needed
