About our Data Discipline

We have a strong culture of data-driven decision making across the whole company. Data is central to how we understand our customers, shape our products, manage risk and grow Monzo sustainably. We believe in empowering teams with high-quality, trusted data and self-serve analytics, while creating space for Data practitioners to focus on the highest-impact questions, opportunities and decisions.

Our Data Discipline is deeply embedded in Monzo’s product areas. Data Scientists, Analytics Engineers, and Machine Learning Engineers work in cross-functional squads alongside Engineers, Designers, Product Managers and other disciplines. This means Data is not a downstream service, and instead we shape strategy, challenge thinking, build the data foundations teams need to move quickly, and share accountability for customer and commercial outcomes.

Our EU team ⭐

Our EU Data team is a full-stack Data team, and together we're building Monzo's presence across Europe from the ground up. We're entering new markets, learning what customers in each one need and finding product-market fit for Monzo.

Our mission is to make money work for everyone, everywhere. As Data Director for EU expansion you'll lead the Data team and shape our product strategy as we grow, deciding where we place our bets, working out what to measure before there's a playbook, and making sure each new market learns fast enough to compound into the next.

You'll work closely with EU leadership (our EU CEO, Country Managers and VP of Product) and Monzo's global Leadership team (the CTO, Head of Data and other Data Directors), sitting on the EU Tech Leadership team and helping shape our global data strategy. To do this well you'll need to relish ambiguity, bringing analytical rigour and commercial judgement to bets that often have to be made before the data is complete.

🔑 You’ll play a key role by...

You'll own the full learning loop that EU expansion runs on, and you'll co-own the product development loop alongside EU Leadership, Product and Engineering. In a new market that often means building those loops from scratch, so you're accountable not just for measuring what happens, but for framing the questions, defining what good looks like, and building the systems that answer them. You'll be a senior voice on the EU Tech Leadership team, the person who reframes the hard problems and puts a number on the trade-off between what's valuable for customers and what's valuable for the business.

Shaping product and commercial strategy:

  • You'll decide where Monzo should bet as we enter each new European market, sizing the opportunity and finding product-market fit for the products and segments most likely to win.
  • You'll use sharp commercial judgement to work through the ambiguity of building in a new market, from pricing and positioning to the levers that drive growth, bringing Data into strategy early so we shape priorities rather than react to decisions already made.

Owning the data strategy and the learning loops:

  • You'll set the data strategy for EU and stand up the foundations each new market needs, from the events we log and the metrics and experiments we design to the forecasts markets learn from.
  • Lead the goal-setting process for EU Expansion, bringing clarity to metric selection and target setting, in close partnership with Finance.

Changing how decisions get made:

  • You'll represent Data directly at the ExCo level, building a shared language of metrics and analytical reasoning so that Data drives EU strategy rather than reporting on it.
  • You'll drive cross-collective collaboration, spotting the high-leverage connections across the business, for example how savings features drive engagement in our Wealth collective.

Building and leading a high-performing team:

  • You'll build, grow and retain a high-performing, full-stack Data team, where everyone shares accountability for product and business outcomes.
  • You'll raise the performance bar, develop the next generation of Data leaders, and model an inclusive, high-craft Data culture as we scale.

🤩 We’d love to hear from you if…

What we're doing here at Monzo excites you, and the idea of helping take it across Europe especially so!

  • You're a strategic data leader who has operated at Director level or above, and you're energised by zero-to-one ambiguity, having built or scaled a data function in a new market, product line or business from an early stage.
  • You move comfortably from detailed metrics and data architecture to customer strategy, commercial outcomes and product-market fit, and you're happy to be the opinionated voice in the room that reframes the trade-off.
  • You lead through learning loops and hold a high technical bar, because you've built or owned the measurement a business relies on to set goals, run experiments and improve, with the judgement to know which methods and investments will pay off.
  • You have experience leading company-wide or division-wide goal-setting, defining high-clarity metrics, setting targets and partnering closely with Finance.
  • You change how organisations make decisions, not just how one project turns out, and you have experience of the cross-collective collaboration that connects the dots across different business areas.
  • You're an empathetic people leader who has grown full-stack Data teams of both individual contributors and managers, comfortable representing Data at ExCo and to C-level peers, and you know what it takes to attract, develop and retain top talent.

🌈 The application journey has 4 key steps

  1. 30 minute recruiter call
  2. 45 minute call with the hiring manager
  3. 4 x 1-hour video calls with various team members, including the General Manager for Payments
  4. A meet and greet with a member of EU Executive Committee

Our average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability.
