Role Overview

We're hiring a Sales Engineer - Commercial to be the dedicated solutions and program partner for our Commercial segment. Commercial permitting is punishingly complex — multi-stakeholder programs, layered scopes, third-party architects and GCs, and demanding billing and compliance realities. Today, a huge amount of that complexity lands on our Account Executives, pulling them away from selling and into invoice relay, vendor onboarding, program monitoring, and customer enablement.

This role consolidates that work into a single, dedicated function so our Commercial AEs can focus entirely on running more sales cycles against more accounts. You'll partner closely with Sales, but you're not a seller — you're the connective tissue between our customers' operational realities and PermitFlow's platform, working alongside the AE across the entire sales cycle and into expansion within target accounts.

Think of this as an expanded Pilot Ops role for the Commercial segment: rather than engaging only during a pre-defined pilot window, you own solution design, program management, and customer enablement end-to-end — bringing deep permitting credibility into the room, keeping complex programs on track, and turning successful deployments into expansion.

What You'll Do

  • Be the permitting SME across sales cycles and pilots. Join AE-led calls as a credible subject-matter expert who can speak the language of expediters, architects, civil engineers, and GCs. Get into the details of customer workflows to understand how PermitFlow fits their process, recommend cadences that optimize the customer experience, and clarify which scopes exist within a given program so the AE can speak knowledgeably about PermitFlow's capabilities across them.

  • Operationalize workflows and clarify scope. Map current-state commercial permitting workflows, identify where PermitFlow fits, and design configurations that align platform capabilities with customer goals across complex, multi-scope programs.

  • Run program management for live pilots and accounts. Own the weekly internal syncs that hold ops leads and managers accountable to due dates, triage risk, and keep architects and GCs responsive. Escalate program-level signals to the AE while distinguishing project-level noise (ops) from issues worth their attention.

  • Generate customer-facing data and reporting. Produce regular program reporting against KPIs so customers always have visibility into status, progress, and value delivered.

  • Be the billing and accounting liaison. Absorb the constant back-and-forth on unpaid invoices, payment timing, and pass-through fees, and fix the friction (such as automated invoice reminders firing when no work was submitted) that frustrates clients and drains AE time.

  • Drive customer enablement. Onboard and train the growing set of stakeholders who need to use PermitFlow — both the third parties already inside our workspaces (architects, civil engineers, and GCs on existing programs) and other departments, offices, and job captains within large accounts, using enablement as a frictionless entry point for expansion.

  • Build solution and enablement assets that scale. Create the repeatable content that makes every future deal easier: AEC enablement playbooks, due-diligence and pre-permitting report templates, software invitation/onboarding lists, preferred architect/GC contact lists, and lunch-and-learn materials that activate job captains across an account's programs.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally. Work closely with Product, Implementation, Operations, and Customer Success to ensure every solution is practical, scalable, and handed off cleanly into deployment.

Who You Are

  • Domain Expert. Deep understanding of commercial construction, permitting, or pre-construction workflows. You've pulled permits, sat across from a building department, run a permit ops team, or worked inside the trades — and contractors, builders, and developers believe you've done their job before.

  • Workflow Designer & Solution Creative. Skilled at mapping customer processes, identifying bottlenecks, and designing elegant, scalable solutions across multi-scope commercial programs.

  • Program & Project Manager. You keep complex, multi-stakeholder programs on track — holding ops teams, architects, and GCs accountable to deadlines, surfacing risk early, and driving accountability across third parties.

  • Sales Partner. Experienced supporting (not replacing) sales teams through discovery, scoping, and solution validation. You advance the deal without trying to own the close.

  • Customer Enablement Lead. You can teach a diverse set of stakeholders how to use a platform and build the training content that scales it.

  • Technical Translator. Able to bridge customer pain points and product capabilities, simplifying complex permitting and operational reality for executive audiences.

  • Cross-Functional Operator. Works fluidly across Sales, Product, Operations, Implementation, and Customer Success to align on deliverables and ensure success.

  • Builder Mentality. Thrives in ambiguity and enjoys creating structure, content, and processes from scratch.

  • Mission-Driven. Energized by fixing the fragmented pre-construction process and transforming how America builds.

How Success Will Be Measured

  • Increased Commercial AE selling capacity — measurably less non-selling work absorbed by reps

  • Health and on-time delivery of pilots and programs you manage

  • Reduction in billing and invoicing friction for commercial accounts

  • Quality and reach of customer enablement, including third-party and in-account adoption

  • Contribution to expansion within target commercial accounts

  • Strength of internal and customer relationships, and alignment between what's sold and what's delivered

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity in a high-growth company

  • 401(k) savings plan

  • Unlimited PTO and paid family leave

  • Home office & equipment stipend

  • Daily in-office lunch and dinner provided

  • Commuter benefits (pre-tax transit and parking)
