Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Machinist to independently set up and operate CNC machine tools in a fast-paced hybrid R&D/production environment. In this role, you will work under general direction with periodic review, taking full ownership of setup, operation, and troubleshooting of CNC machined parts from first article through production run. You will read and interpret drawings and programs, make the tooling and work-holding decisions the job requires, and serve as a technical resource to other machinists on the floor. This is a hands-on role for a journeyman-level machinist who takes pride in accuracy, safety, and continuous improvement.

Must Have: Haas Lathe/Mill setup and operation; Haas CNC controls
Preferred: 5-axis machining; Okuma CNC controls
Plus: CNC programming

Responsibilities

  • Completely and independently set up CNC machines, making required adjustments to tooling, collets, work holding, and related components

  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems related to the setup and operation of tooling, work holding, and auto-loading CNC machine tools

  • Read and interpret drawings, programs, and supporting documentation to visualize required machining and determine sequence of operations

  • Input programs to the CNC consistent with setup procedure, and perform dry runs to verify setup prior to production run

  • Recognize and report errors in programming and operations, collaborating with programmers, supervisors, and other personnel to correct them

  • Maintain responsibility for job order accuracy and productivity throughout the production run, not just at setup

  • Verify work using precision measuring instruments including comparators, indicators, calipers, and micrometers, and confirm accuracy of parts produced

  • Perform Total Productive Maintenance and daily machine care to prevent equipment damage and lost production hours

  • Communicate quality concerns and work-in-progress timing issues to appropriate personnel when they affect production schedules

  • Train machinists of equal or lower classification in CNC setup and operation, as well as company methods, production workflow, and tracking procedures

  • Participate actively in problem solving, team building, and continuous improvement of process, productivity, and quality

  • Apply initiative and ingenuity in adapting tooling and shop aids to complete operations, and suggest improvements to workflow and equipment operation

  • Maintain good housekeeping and adhere to and enforce company safety rules

  • Take on additional work as current tasks are completed, and perform other work-related tasks as needed

Qualifications

  • 7–10 years of experience in the setup and operation of CNC machines, tools, and equipment, or equivalent skills and knowledge

  • Demonstrated capability to set up and operate required CNC machines at a journeyman level

  • Proven ability to set up and operate Haas lathes and mills, and proficiency with Haas CNC controls (required)

  • Ability to read precision measuring instruments including comparators, indicators, calipers, and micrometers

  • Ability to apply mathematical operations using fractions, decimals, trigonometry, and geometry as required by machining operations

  • Ability to read and write English at the level required for company shop documentation; must demonstrate math and English proficiency through company testing as required

  • Education generally equivalent to a journeyman trade school graduate

  • Strong interpersonal skills with clear written and verbal communication, particularly with programmers and supervisors

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in an environment where improper attention to setup or processing can result in significant equipment damage or lost man-hours

  • 5-axis machining experience (preferred)

  • Experience with Okuma CNC controls (preferred)

  • CNC programming experience (a plus)

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking on a shop floor

  • Manual dexterity to operate CNC machine controls, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments

  • Visual acuity to read drawings, programs, dial indicators, and precision measuring instruments

  • Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and twisting to load work, adjust tooling, and access machine interiors

  • Lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds occasionally (e.g., raw stock, fixtures, tooling)

  • Regular exposure to a manufacturing environment including moving machinery, noise, coolant, metal chips, and varying temperatures

  • Required use of personal protective equipment including safety glasses and steel-toe footwear
