Senior Front-End Engineer, Quantum Tools

Location: Oxford, England, UK
Working pattern: Hybrid, two days per week on site (minimum)

The Role:

We are looking for a Senior Front-End Engineer to join our Quantum Tools software team at IonQ. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing and supporting web based tools for scientific research and hardware integration for use by our teams of quantum scientists and engineers to enable their work on our research and development goals as an organisation.

Your role will be to shape best in class UX/UI that sets the standard across IonQ. This will directly contribute to our core mission of building, operating and supporting the world's most powerful quantum computers.

Responsibilities:

In this position, you will work on building a number of different tools for our teams, including information dense dashboard, system telemetry and calibration, amongst others. You will need to create tools capable of managing complex states in a data intensive application environment, supporting the effective delivery of quantum tooling for the next gen platforms. You’ll have the opportunity to deepen your understanding of complex systems, design features end to end that directly impact users, contributing directly to the success of the project.

Key responsibilities include:

• Working on developing scientific software and hardware control interfaces for use by teams across IonQ.
• Adhering to and setting strict testing discipline.
• Liaising with users from a range of cross-functional backgrounds to gather requirements for tools and gain a better understanding of workflows.
• Designing and implementing web based tooling.
• Work as part of the wider quantum tools and software team to embed best practice and stronger processes.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will require prior experience in front-end development, including working with Typescript, HTML, CSS and React. We are looking for someone who can work across teams, turn abstract workflow into a concrete graphical tool working closely with backend engineers and contribute effectively within a fast moving, highly technical team.

You’d be a great fit with:

• Deep experience in a modern framework such as React, Vue, Svelte or Solid.
• Experience building interfaces around streaming data, including handling frequent updates, subscriptions, connection failures and clear system-status feedback.
• Experience building interactive charts and working with large datasets.
• The ability to diagnose rendering bottlenecks and reason about plot update frequency, virtualisation, and SVG, Canvas and WebGL trade-offs.
• Sound interaction and visual design judgement for information-dense operator tools, including information hierarchy, accessibility and keyboard workflows.
