What Product Management is like at Gusto:

  • Our Product team is lean, which means you'll have a high degree of impact and ownership. We believe in smaller, empowered teams that move quickly with less overhead. You'll move fast by pairing sharp product judgment with fluency in AI tools — automating what slows teams down and amplifying what makes them creative and high-performing.
  • We're boundaryless builders. Lines between roles are intentionally blurred, and our PMs do whatever it takes to deliver outcomes. You'll prototype, automate, design, and ship — using AI as your co-builder to turn problems into durable solutions that deliver customer value with urgency and care.
  • We're here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners — building technology for an AI-first world that gives them the superpowers to run and grow their businesses with confidence.
  • We're comfortable with change. Our environment moves fast, and PMs here thrive in ambiguity — blending curiosity, experimentation, and AI-native craft to shape how products (and work itself) are built at Gusto.

About the Team:

Gusto's Consumer Money team builds financial products for the millions of employees paid through Gusto every month. Gusto Wallet gives workers direct access to their pay and a set of tools to manage it: spend accounts, savings goals, paycheck splitting, and on-demand access to earned wages. Because Gusto runs payroll, we sit at the source of income itself, positioning us to be a powerful financial operating system for workers.

This role owns core Wallet experiences and works at the intersection of payroll and consumer banking. You'll build products that help workers smooth cash flow between paychecks, save automatically, and avoid predatory alternatives like payday lenders and overdraft fees.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Own roadmap initiatives spanning Gusto financial services, helping workers make financial progress across spending, saving, credit, and money management.
  • Ship consumer banking experiences across the customer lifecycle - onboarding and activation, everyday usage, retention and engagement, and customer support - on all surfaces a customer wishes to engage.
  • Take responsibility for the business outcomes of your workstream as a true owner.
  • Be the fintech infrastructure and payments expert that reliably untangles complexity and ships durable systems.
  • Use Gusto's unique position in the payroll ecosystem to build consumer features that can only be built at the origination of income
  • Deeply understand our customers, particularly hourly and salaried workforces to craft product narratives and help create real financial progress.
  • Get in the trenches with cross-functional teams spanning Product, Engineering, Design, Data, Risk, Compliance, Legal, and Ops to ship resilient, compliant, and delightful products.
  • Evaluate and execute opportunities with external vendors (e.g., issuing banks, card processors, banking infrastructure providers) to deliver reliable, integrated experiences.
  • Measure what matters — define KPIs around activation, funding, engagement, and retention, and use data to drive prioritization, learning, and iteration.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Has 7+ years of product management experience, with directly related product management work in accounting, financial software, or an adjacent domain (mandatory).
  • Has familiarity with AI tools and comfortable using AI tools, including prototypes to accelerate the development lifecycle.
  • Is data oriented and experienced using data to inform decisions and track outcomes
  • Brings meaningful familiarity with accounting concepts (journal entries, reconciliation flows) and can ramp quickly into the accounting product space.
  • Is comfortable facing ambiguous problems.
  • Is able to wear multiple hats, for example conducting user research, forecasting product adoption or prototyping a new feature all in the same week
  • Can understand not just how an individual feature works, but how it fits into the broader accounting system.
  • Is comfortable working through detailed workflows, edge cases, data mappings, ledger concepts, and controls needed for accountant confidence.
  • Should have strong frameworks/foundations to meaningfully prioritize and deliver on customer needs and business outcomes.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $152,000/yr to $190,000/yr in Denver, and $184,000/yr to $230,000/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role).
