Quick facts
From the original posting
Hippocratic AI builds safety-focused generative AI agents for healthcare: voice agents, care navigation, and patient engagement tools that work alongside clinicians to extend care beyond the hospital walls. Our platform is deeply integrated with health system technology, most centrally Epic, and increasingly Cerner (Oracle Health) and Athenahealth, so our agents can schedule, document, and coordinate care the same way a staff member would.
As Director of Integration Engineering, you’ll lead the team responsible for building and operating the technical connections between Hippocratic AI and every EHR and health system environment we work in. You’ll own the production integration and development shop end to end, including architecture, delivery, on-call reliability, and the engineering practices that keep partner go-lives on schedule and interfaces running cleanly in production.
You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, Partnerships, and partner-side IT and interface teams to scope new integrations, keep existing ones healthy, and build a team and a process that scales as Hippocratic AI adds health system partners. You’ll manage engineers across the US and India, and you’ll be the executive point of accountability for integration delivery and production stability.
Own the production integration and development shop for Hippocratic AI’s EHR connectivity, covering Epic (Interconnect, Bridges, App Orchard/Vendor Services APIs), Cerner (Oracle Health), and athenahealth, plus HL7 v2 interface feeds and flat file exchanges with partner health systems.
Set technical direction and delivery standards for the integration team, balancing new partner go-lives against the stability of integrations already in production.
Lead and grow a distributed engineering team spanning the US and India, including hiring, performance management, on-call rotation design, and day-to-day prioritization across time zones.
Establish engineering practices for code review, branching strategy, release cadence, and incident response, using GitHub and Jira as the backbone for source control, change tracking, and work management.
Set standards for the team’s engineering toolkit (Python-based data transformation, integration engines such as InterSystems IRIS and Redox, and CI/CD pipelines) and make the build-vs-buy calls on when to use each.
Partner with Product and Partnerships to scope new integration work, size effort accurately, and commit to go-live timelines the team can hit.
Maintain deep technical fluency in Epic’s integration technologies (FHIR/REST APIs, HL7v2 interfaces, Interconnect) and apply the same rigor to Cerner (Oracle Health) and athenahealth integrations as those partnerships grow.
Direct architecture decisions for HL7 v2 messaging, flat file interfaces, and modern API-based integrations (FHIR/REST), guiding the right method for each partner’s capabilities and constraints alongside the architects.
Guide the team’s use of integration engines (InterSystems IRIS, Redox) and FHIR bulk data workflows, and push toward reusable components and templates that speed up future go-lives.
Ensure every production interface has monitoring, alerting, and a clear escalation path, and drive root-cause fixes, not workarounds, when interfaces fail.
Maintain a current, defensible map of every live integration, its data flows, and its dependencies, so the team can answer “what happens if this changes” for any partner on short notice.
Track Epic, Cerner, and athenahealth platform changes (API deprecations, new interoperability mandates, vendor portal requirements) and keep the roadmap ahead of them.
We believe the best ideas happen together. To support fast collaboration and a strong team culture, this role is expected to be in our Menlo Park office five days a week. Given the team’s footprint across the US and India, some flexibility for early or late meetings to overlap with the India-based team is expected, along with periodic travel to partner health systems and occasional overnight or out-of-state trips to support go-lives and escalations.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Health Informatics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years in healthcare integration engineering, with hands-on experience integrating against Epic (required); Cerner (Oracle Health) and/or athenahealth experience strongly preferred.
3+ years managing a production integration and/or software development team, including on-call ownership for live interfaces.
Deep, working knowledge of HL7 v2 messaging, flat file interface design, and modern API-based integration patterns (REST, FHIR), along with working knowledge of X12 transactions, across EHR ecosystems.
Proven experience running engineering delivery with GitHub (source control, code review, branching strategy) and Jira (sprint planning, issue tracking, release management).
Experience managing engineers across distributed, multi-time-zone teams, including the US and India.
Track record of taking health system integrations live on schedule and keeping them stable in production, including incident response and root-cause resolution.
Working knowledge of Python-based development and at least one integration engine (InterSystems IRIS), sufficient to review architecture and unblock the team on technical decisions.
Comfort working directly with internal teams as well as partner IT, interface, and clinical informatics teams during scoping, build, and go-live.
Direct experience with Epic’s Show Room, App Orchard/Vendor Services API catalog.
Experience with Cerner Millennium interfaces or athenahealth’s API/partner integration program specifically, not just Epic.
Background standing up or scaling an integration engineering function inside a high-growth health tech or digital health company.
Familiarity with scheduling APIs, patient engagement platforms, or voice/AI agent architectures in a clinical setting.
Experience with infrastructure and vendor relationships supporting integrations (e.g., telephony, cloud infrastructure, data exchange platforms).
Experience with CI/CD, containerization (Docker), or cloud-based deployment pipelines for integration workloads.
Background in AI/ML data pipelines or healthcare analytics.
Advanced degree in a technical or health informatics field.
Every live Epic, Cerner, and athenahealth integration runs cleanly in production, with monitoring, alerting, and documented escalation paths in place.
New partner integrations go live on committed timelines, with clear, repeatable scoping and delivery processes behind them.
The US and India integration team operates as one team, with clear ownership, consistent on-call coverage, and strong engineering practices in GitHub and Jira.
Executive leadership has a current, accurate picture of integration health, delivery status, and production risk across every partner.
Hippocratic AI has a reputation among health system partners as a technically rigorous, easy-to-integrate-with vendor.
