About the Role

We're hiring a Director of Safety to build and scale safety strategy for our distributed in-home care workforce. In this role, you will own reducing injury rates and severity, reducing workers' compensation spend, and driving a safe environment for clients and Care Professionals (CPs). You'll mine large, ambiguous, and imperfect datasets to surface the risk indicators that actually predict incidents and injuries, then design systemic solutions—built on technology, not just process—that hold up as we grow into new markets and service lines. You'll own the full workers' compensation lifecycle, building durable programs that manage costs more effectively. You will also partner with Product and Engineering to build tools and automation that make safety a scalable advantage rather than a manual, reactive function.

The right candidate has built and scaled safety, trust & safety, or risk programs inside a technology-enabled, high-growth, distributed workforce, using data and product thinking to solve problems at scale. You're equally comfortable diving into the details of a single incident investigation and stepping back to design company-wide systems. You think outside the box rather than defaulting to "industry best practice"—you can identify the handful of activities that actually move injury and cost outcomes, build the case for whichever investment they require, and influence outcomes across distributed teams who don't report to you. You can also translate messy, imperfect data into a clear, credible story for leadership.

This role is fully remote and can be based anywhere in the U.S. You'll manage your team remotely, so strong written communication and remote coaching skills are essential.

As a Director of Safety at Honor, you will:

Safety Program Leadership

  • Own the safety operating model and architecture, balancing quick fixes with the larger structural changes the business needs as it scales.
  • Build systemic solutions that address common in-home care hazards: environmental safety, mobility issues, infection control, client behavior, and more.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to build tools, automation, and product features that reduce risk, and make the case for the investment they require.
  • Develop programs to build a culture of safety among Care Professionals and HQ employees.

Workers' Compensation & Incident Management

  • Own the outcome of reducing workers' compensation spend, with end-to-end accountability for strategy and case management.
  • Use data to find the levers that reduce claim cost and cycle time, and build durable programs and tooling that manage costs more effectively when injuries do occur, keeping claims on track at scale.
  • Own vendor management and evaluate alternative models.
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis, and turn findings into corrective action plans that prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate incident records and reporting for leadership.
  • Forecast reserves, build forward-looking budgets, and communicate financial impact to leadership. • Ensure compliance with OSHA and state-specific home care regulations.

Data & Culture

  • Own the metrics that make safety and claims performance visible and enable early intervention.
  • Communicate complex and imperfect data clearly to leadership, presenting findings and recommendations—including business cases for new investment—in terms executives can act on.
  • Influence outcomes across distributed, cross-functional teams—franchise operators, field leaders, Product, and Engineering—who don't report to you directly.

Leadership Principles We'll Assess in This Role

  • Balance Incremental and Radical Change: You know when to close the gap with a quick fix and when the data says to rethink the safety or claims model entirely. You push for durable, technology-enabled programs and you're willing to think outside the box and embrace unconventional approaches when a conventional fix won't hold.
  • Think Systemically: You consider how a safety intervention ripples across markets, franchise operators, Care Pros, and clients before you act, and you build systemic solutions that leverage technology rather than one-off fixes. You identify the handful of activities that actually move injury rates and workers' compensation spend, rather than defaulting to "industry best practice."
  • Fly High & Dive Deep: You work with large, ambiguous, and imperfect datasets to find the risk indicators hiding in the noise, and you know when to dive into the details of a single claim or incident versus stepping back to run the function at scale. You audit when the data and what you're hearing from the field don't match.
  • Drive Impact: You own the outcome of reducing workers' compensation spend and building a safer environment for clients and Care Professionals—measured by injury rate and severity reduction, not activity. You communicate complex and imperfect data clearly to leadership and influence outcomes across distributed, cross-functional teams who don't report to you.

We're Looking for You to Bring

  • 8+ years in safety, risk, trust & safety, or operations leadership, with a track record of scaling programs inside a fast-growing, technology-enabled, distributed workforce (delivery, rideshare, e-commerce fulfillment, on-demand services, logistics).
  • Strong data skills (SQL, analytics, dashboarding) and a track record of working with large, ambiguous, and imperfect datasets to identify risk indicators, find root causes, and prioritize investment.
  • Experience using technology and automation—not just process and headcount—to scale safety or operational outcomes.
  • Experience owning workers' compensation end-to-end: claims, return-to-work plans, and provider relationships (or comparable risk/insurance claims experience).
  • A track record of building the business case for investment, communicating complex and imperfect data clearly, and winning buy-in from senior leadership.
  • Experience building and managing a remote team, including hiring, developing, and retaining talent as a function scales.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to influence outcomes across distributed teams—from frontline staff to executives.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and related regulatory frameworks, or the ability to ramp quickly from an adjacent regulated environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience at a technology-enabled, high-growth company (DoorDash, Amazon, Chewy, Instacart, Uber, Lyft, or similar) in safety, trust & safety, risk, or operations.
  • Experience partnering with Product and Engineering to ship tools or product features that reduce risk at scale.
  • Familiarity with modern safety/case management software, data platforms, and BI tools.
  • Experience scaling a team through a period of significant growth, including building a leadership pipeline.
