Joblaze insights
Quick facts
From the original posting
Base works in the physical world. A homeowner finds us and decides to trust a new kind of power company. A crew installs the battery. The city approves it, the utility connects it, and we dispatch it, telling it when to charge and when to send power back based on local grid conditions and the member’s usage. Our software has to work inside every one of those steps.
Now we’re going nationwide, and every new state is a new puzzle. The utilities and grids are different. Cities have their own rules. Homeowners think about batteries very differently, too: someone in Houston who lived through a week-long outage sees a home battery differently than someone who has never lost power. Launching a market means learning all of that fast, building software that works there, and then doing it again in the next state.
We’re hiring a forward deployed engineer to go where those problems are.
How this role works
You’ll embed with the teams and partners behind each launch and learn how their operations really run. Then you’ll build whatever it takes to make the launch work, from a partner’s spreadsheet to BaseOS to the firmware on the battery. What you learn goes back to our Core Experience and Platform teams, so every launch makes the system better.
Where you might embed
Growth: our sales and marketing teams and the partners who bring homeowners to Base, like homebuilders and channel partners. Build what each new market needs to launch, and scale what works from state to state.
Deployments: our deployments team and installer partners. Get new crews, paperwork rules, and handoffs right in every state.
Utilities: our utility and markets team and the utilities we connect to. Use grid data to find where the grid is strained, decide where batteries do the most good, and shape how we dispatch the fleet.
What you’ll do
Learn how the work really gets done, and where it breaks, by working alongside the team or partner
Help decide which problems matter most, what to build, and what to fix with process instead of code
Build end-to-end software: integrations, internal tools, workflows, data pipelines, and partner-facing products
Ship a prototype fast, then harden what works so other teams can rely on it
Work with utility partners on grid constraints and data, and build tools that turn that data into decisions about where to deploy batteries and how to command them
Launch new states by standing up the partner integrations, workflows, and data each market needs, and make the next launch faster
What you’ll bring
2+ years building production software in product or full-stack engineering roles
Strong frontend and full-stack skills, with comfort across modern web apps, APIs, data models, and stateful user experiences
Strong product judgment and a track record of turning ambiguous ideas into shipped, useful products
Experience in 0-to-1 or fast-moving environments where user needs, product shape, and success metrics are still changing
Experience using product analytics, experimentation, and data to guide decisions
Intensity and urgency, and a high bar for your own work
First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
