From the original posting

In 1967, John Shepherd-Barron reached his bank minutes after closing and could not get at his own money. In the bath that evening, he thought of a chocolate bar dispenser and swapped the chocolate for cash. On 27 June, outside a Barclays branch on Enfield High Street, an actor named Reg Varney drew £10 from the world's first cash machine. It took a four-digit code (six, until his wife told him nobody remembers six). The bank's hours had stopped being the customer's problem.

Nearly sixty years later, the bar has moved, but the test hasn't: a personal financial product is judged on whether it fits the life of the person using it. People do not read documentation, forgive a confusing screen, or care how the ledger works. They want one place that makes sense of everything — spending, saving, planning, investing — and that anticipates rather than reports: where they stand, what deserves attention, what to do next. Mercury is building personal banking* to that standard.

Personal Banking is how Mercury earns a place in someone's financial life. We're looking for a Head of Product to own it end-to-end: setting product strategy, leading a team of product managers, driving growth and engagement, and owning business performance.

*Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build a personal banking experience so good that people tell their friends and colleagues about it
  • Own the metrics, product strategy and the propositions we take to our customers, covering personal money management, banking, savings, investments, money movement, and in the future, lending
  • Set the craft bar: sweat the details — copy, latency, empty states — that decide whether a consumer product feels inevitable rather than adequate
  • Drive the use of AI in products where it makes the experience meaningfully better
  • Build and scale the org: recruit and lead a high-performing PM team, instill strong build discipline, develop future leaders, and set a cadence and culture that drives pace and quality
  • Grow the business: own acquisition, activation, retention, and the loops that compound, including how personal banking connects to the businesses Mercury already serves
  • Make reliability and trust product features: own uptime, correctness, latency, and support outcomes, and be measured on them
  • Align the ecosystem: bring product, engineering, design, data, risk, compliance, legal, marketing, support, and partners behind one cohesive strategy

Some things that might make you successful in a role like this:

  • A consumer product leader with taste: you have built products millions of people chose to use, and can point to the decisions that made them work
  • You have shipped AI-led products to real consumers and have opinions about what AI makes possible and where it fails
  • An exceptionally high bar for craft, and a customer-centered, data-driven, and experimentation-oriented approach
  • 10+ years building consumer products, including time owning a product's growth and economics, not only its roadmap
  • 5+ years leading product managers: hiring, coaching, org design, and performance management
  • Experience launching and scaling 0-1 products, alongside operating a large product with real customers on it
  • Exceptional cross-functional leadership across engineering, design, data, risk, compliance, and partners
  • Nice to have: banking, payments, or fintech experience. We can teach you the rails; we cannot teach product judgment
  • Sound judgment in a regulated environment: you balance a delightful experience with the controls a banking product requires, and know which corners are never worth cutting
