From the original posting
The Manufacturing Engineer – Electrical Detail Planning translates electrical system designs, equipment arrangements, and wire connection data into the detailed work instructions used to install electrical equipment, route and pull cable, and complete terminations aboard autonomous surface vessels. This role covers both the physical hardware side of electrical installation and the planning required to turn a wire connection list into a buildable installation strategy.
Electrical installation in shipbuilding depends on foundations, wireways, and penetrations being planned and installed at the correct stage of construction, and on cable routing being translated from a connection list into a real physical path through the ship. The Manufacturing Engineer ensures this translation happens accurately and efficiently, minimizing rework and schedule risk.
This role works closely with design engineering, structural and outfitting planning, and waterfront production to ensure electrical installation work is sequenced correctly and executable by the trades.
Equipment & Hardware Installation Planning
Develop work instructions for equipment foundation fabrication and installation, equipment mounting, and alignment.
Plan wireway and cable tray routing and support, and define penetration methods through decks and bulkheads using Roxtec or equivalent transit systems.
Coordinate installation sequencing with structural and outfitting trades to avoid interferences.
Cable Routing & Hook-Up Planning
Translate wire connection lists (source-to-destination data) into a physical cable routing and installation strategy.
Sequence cable pulls logically by run, zone, or system to minimize rework and maximize efficiency.
Develop cable pulling and termination work packages specifying route, order, and termination method.
Technical & Compliance Requirements
Account for cable separation, bend radius, fill, and EMI/segregation requirements in routing plans.
Flag connection list errors or routing conflicts to design engineering before they surface during installation.
Ensure work instructions reflect ABS, USCG, and NAVSEA requirements, material traceability, and test requirements (continuity, megger, hi-pot).
Production Support & Continuous Improvement
Support first-article pulls and terminations, walking the work with electricians and leads.
Refine routing plans and standard work based on floor feedback.
Maintain documentation of installation and routing standards across the program.
Cable routes and equipment installations match the connection list and design intent without rework.
Penetrations and wireways are installed and ready before cable pulling begins.
Electricians can execute pull and termination packages without returning to design for clarification.
Routing conflicts and connection list errors are caught before installation, not during it.
Production and design trust the electrical plan as an accurate, buildable reference.
Required
Hands-on experience in marine electrical trades (shipboard electrician, cable installer, electrical technician) or equivalent planning experience built on that trade background.
Understanding of equipment foundation and installation practices, wireway/cable tray systems, and penetration/transit methods such as Roxtec.
Ability to read wiring diagrams, connection/cable lists, and one-line diagrams, and translate a source-to-destination connection into a physical route.
Working knowledge of how ships are built, including unit/block construction and zone outfitting.
Strong written communication skills to produce clear, unambiguous work instructions.
Preferred
Experience in new construction shipbuilding; repair/overhaul experience also considered.
Familiarity with cable pulling and termination methods (crimp, solder, mechanical lug).
Experience with PLM/ERP systems and connection-list/database management tools.
Familiarity with ABS, USCG, or NAVSEA requirements as they apply to electrical installation.
Technical/trade school, associate's, or bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Occasional standing and walking within the office
Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment
Visual acuity to read screens, documents, and reports
Occasional reaching, bending, or stooping to access file drawers, cabinets, or office supplies
Lifting and carrying items up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, packages)
Time Off: Generous PTO and Holidays
Retirement Plan: 401(k) plan with company match
Pet Insurance: Discounted pet insurance options including 24/7 Telehealth helpline
