Senior Site Reliability Engineer - Edge

Location: Ottawa/Toronto, On-Site

Reports to: Head of Security

The Role

We build rugged edge-compute devices for extreme environments — the small, hardened computers that run alongside our mesh radios and sensors in the field. Today those devices are built and configured one at a time, by hand, and they reach the field inconsistently set up. This role turns that into a repeatable process: one standard hardware-and-software build, produced the same way every time, secure by default, and ready to ship.

This is a build-from-scratch role. You'll define what "reliable" means for hardware that has to keep working in harsh, sometimes disconnected conditions, and build the tooling to get there. You'll work closely with our Head of Security so the devices are secure from the ground up.

You don't need a defence background, and you don't need to have done every part of this before. If you've run Linux on real hardware and want to own a system end to end, we'd like to talk.

What You'll Do

  • Build one standard edge device — the hardware, the operating-system image, and the setup process — so every unit ships configured the same way.

  • Define how we measure reliability for field hardware, and set the targets the team works toward.

  • Make the devices secure by default: a hardened OS, a verified software supply chain, and secure startup on every unit.

  • Make sure the device works cleanly with our mesh radios, sensors, and networking software.

  • Build monitoring that keeps working even when the connection is weak or drops — and that doubles as an early warning for security issues.

  • Document and automate the whole build so it doesn't depend on any one person's knowledge.

What You Bring

  • Senior-level experience running Linux on real hardware — embedded systems, single-board computers, or similar, not just cloud servers.

  • Strong networking fundamentals — you can reason through and debug a network when something breaks.

  • Comfort building something from scratch and bringing order to an ambiguous problem.

Nice to Have

You don't need these to apply — strong candidates will have some, not all. Tell us which ones are your strengths:

  • Building systems that run in disconnected, intermittent, or low-bandwidth conditions.

  • ARM / edge compute (e.g. Jetson), ROS, or cross-compilation.

  • Security tooling — SELinux, secure boot, TPM/attestation, reproducible builds, supply-chain verification.

  • Mesh or RF networking.

  • Defence or other regulated-industry experience.

  • Cold-weather or environmental hardware testing.

No defence background required.

We've hired people who didn't tick every box. If this is the work you want to do, please apply anyway.
