Quick facts
From the original posting
Astro Mechanica is seeking an intern to join our Software Engineering Team for the summer of 2027 (program begins on June 7, 2027 for semester schools and June 27, 2027 for quarter schools). This is not a sandbox internship. You’ll be embedded with the team in our San Francisco office, working on real projects that ship and contribute directly to our hardware and flight programs. The ideal candidate is curious, learns quickly, and is excited to write software that touches real aircraft systems. You’ll work alongside full-time engineers, take part in design discussions and code reviews, and own meaningful pieces of work from start to finish. Your work will move fast in a dynamic startup environment and will have a direct impact on our mission.
Work as an embedded member of the software team, joining standups, design reviews, and planning alongside full-time engineers
Own a scoped, real-world project from design through implementation, testing, and delivery, with mentorship from senior engineers
Contribute to flight software, simulation, test infrastructure, or internal engineering tools
Test your code on real flight hardware (flight computers, embedded microprocessors, engine hardware)
Write clean, testable, and maintainable code, including unit and integration tests
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, propulsion, and controls engineers to understand software requirements
Debug issues across the stack and learn how software integrates with embedded and real-time systems
Present your work to the team at the end of the summer
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or a Science discipline
Experience with C++, Rust, Python, or another programming language, through coursework, projects, research, or prior internships
Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and object oriented programming
Familiarity with version control (Git) and software testing practices
Ambition to work in a fast-paced environment and take ownership of your work
Available for a full-time, in-person internship in San Francisco during Summer 2027 (approximately 10–12 weeks)
Competitive hourly pay
Hands-on mentorship from experienced engineers
Company-funded perks, including team lunches, game nights, and other activities
