About the Role

OpenGov is seeking a Senior Product Engineer to drive growth and expansion of OG Assist, our flagship AI assistant platform built specifically for governments. This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced practitioner who owns outcomes end to end: from discovery and iteration with customers, through architecture and implementation, to shipping production code on the platform. You operate comfortably in a fast-paced, AI-native environment, and you lead by example, both in the quality of your product thinking and the code you write, as you deliver impact for our customers. This role carries direct engineering impact, you are expected to write, review, and ship code yourself, not only partner with engineering to unblock others.

How AI Works in This Role

AI-native tooling handles a significant portion of what product managers, UX designers, and engineers have historically spent their time on. That time is yours to redirect toward higher-leverage work. Specifically:

  • Building with customers: AI drafts the first spec from your intent statement and intuition. You review, sharpen, own what gets built, then build it.

  • UX design: AI generates mockups from the design system based on your flow definitions. Experience Architects maintain the system itself. You make the product decisions within it and implement the resulting experience.

  • Research synthesis: AI clusters and themes interview notes, call transcripts, and support data. You interpret what it means for the roadmap and make the call.

  • Implementation: AI-assisted coding tools scaffold boilerplate, generate first-pass implementations, and accelerate routine work. You own architecture, correctness, and production quality, the parts AI cannot be trusted with.

  • Release content: AI generates release notes, in-app announcements, and enablement materials from your shipped features.

  • Code review: Automated review catches style, security, and regression issues. You stay accountable for quality outcomes, not the review queue.

  • Test coverage: AI generates test cases from the acceptance criteria you write. Your job is to write criteria precise enough to verify, and to write the tests AI can't.

  • Competitive intelligence: AI monitors competitor moves and surfaces market signals. You form the point of view and decide what it means for your roadmap.

What AI does not do: understand your customers, make the call on what matters, own the outcome, write production-grade code unsupervised, or build the cross-functional trust that makes things ship. That is the job.

What You'll Own

  • Refine and communicate the product vision for OG Assist, grounded in customer research, competitive context, and business goals; not inherited from committee.

  • Conduct and synthesize customer discovery: translate what you hear into clear, defensible decisions about what to build and what to cut.

  • Own the product roadmap: prioritize ruthlessly, explain your reasoning publicly, and revise it when new facts warrant it.

  • Design and build features end to end: architect solutions, write production code, and ship to customers. You are a primary contributor to the codebase, not just its client.

  • Define user experience flows and interaction patterns within the design system, then implement them; escalate to Experience Architects only when genuinely new system-level patterns are required.

  • Write clear intent documents that AI tooling can execute against; review and own both AI-generated specs and AI-generated code for accuracy, completeness, and correctness.

  • Set technical direction within your area: make build-vs-buy calls, evaluate tradeoffs, and resolve ambiguity in real time during development without becoming a bottleneck for other engineers.

  • Track adoption, usage, and business outcome metrics; use them to drive the next iteration, not just to report status.

  • Represent your product in customer conversations, QBRs, and cross-functional reviews, the full commercial picture, not just the feature set.

  • Identify gaps in AI harnesses, design system coverage, and platform capability; close the ones you can yourself and surface the rest as investment requests with clear business justification.

Qualifications & Preferred Experience

  • 6 to 9 years of experience spanning product ownership and hands-on software engineering, with a track record of shipping production code in a SaaS environment.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals: comfortable owning a feature from design through implementation, testing, and deployment.

  • Proficiency in modern web technologies (TypeScript, React) and comfort picking up the specific stack used by OG Assist.

  • Experience building with or on top of LLMs or AI agents in production is a strong plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to own projects end to end, provide technical direction to peers, and keep stakeholders informed.

  • Strategic mindset: analyzes competitive landscape, market trends, and customer behavior to inform both roadmap and architecture decisions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; documents decisions clearly and influences others through structured reasoning.

  • Comfortable defining UX flows and working within a design system, with the technical range to implement what you design.

  • Fluent in AI-native workflows for both product and engineering work; can identify gaps in AI tooling and articulate platform investment needs.

  • Experience representing products in customer-facing forums (QBRs, discovery sessions, executive reviews).
