From the original posting

Bevi is on a mission to transform how beverages are delivered and consumed. Our connected beverage platform eliminates the need for single-use bottles and cans, making it easy, fun, and sustainable to stay hydrated. As the category leader in IoT-enabled beverage technology, we're building a future where Bevi machines are everywhere people live, work, and connect. We've raised over $160M in venture capital, serve thousands of customers across the US, Canada, UK and Ireland, and we've been rapidly growing year over year, saving over 1 billion bottles from waste. In addition to driving hypergrowth with our current product line, Bevi is heavily investing in new product development.

Bevi is looking for a Director of Embedded Engineering to lead the team that builds the electronics and firmware at the heart of every Bevi machine. From the boards that drive our pumps, valves, sensors and chillers, to the firmware and embedded Linux/Android platform that keep thousands of connected machines running reliably in the field, this team makes the hardware come alive.

You will own and manage the electrical and firmware engineers who design, bring up, and sustain our products, and you'll be the person who makes sure the boards, the code, and the system architecture fit together as one platform across our current fleet and our next generation of machines. This is a technical and people leadership role in equal measure. You'll set the embedded architecture and engineering standards, and you'll build and lead a team that needs both a strong technical leader and a strong people manager.

This role reports to the VP of Engineering and sits on the engineering leadership team. It will operate in close partnership with Mechanical, Software, Systems, Quality, Manufacturing, and our contract manufacturing and design partners. As Bevi's product portfolio grows, there's room for this role to grow with it.

Your Day to Day

Embedded Architecture & Technical Direction

  • Own the embedded system architecture across Bevi's products: the multi-board electrical design, the single-board computer and SoM platform, the microcontroller firmware, and the interfaces that tie them together.
  • Set the technical roadmap for embedded, including platform consolidation, next-generation compute and control boards, and reuse across product lines so each new machine is not a clean-sheet effort.
  • Make the hard tradeoff calls on reliability, cost, component availability, and speed of development, and bring a clear point of view to the engineering leadership team.
  • Stay hands-on enough to review schematics, layouts, and firmware architecture, and to dig into a field failure with the team when it matters.

New Product Development & Sustaining

  • Lead EE and FW execution on new product programs from concept and prototype through board bring-up, design verification, regulatory certification, and production release.
  • Own the health of embedded systems in the field: firmware releases, fleet diagnostics, remote management, and fast root-cause analysis and corrective action when issues reach customers.
  • Drive component lifecycle management, second sourcing, and design changes that protect supply continuity and margin for products already in production.
  • Partner with Quality and Manufacturing on test strategy, end-of-line testing, and test fixtures so what we design can be built and verified at scale.

Team Leadership

  • Manage and grow a team of Electrical Engineers and Firmware Engineers, giving each discipline what it needs to do great work while keeping both aligned to one platform.
  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers on technical depth and career growth, and build a team that can scale with Bevi's product roadmap.
  • Build clear ownership, documentation, and knowledge sharing so critical systems never depend on a single person.

Cross-Functional & Partner Leadership

  • Work directly with Mechanical, Software, and Systems Engineering to define system requirements and protect design integrity from concept through production.
  • Manage external design partners, contract manufacturers (domestic and overseas), and component suppliers. Own design for manufacturability, NPI handoff, and production support for electronics at volume, including test coverage, yield, and corrective actions.
  • Represent embedded in program reviews, design reviews, and risk reviews, making sure embedded constraints shape decisions early rather than surfacing late.
  • Own embedded regulatory and compliance readiness (e.g., UL, FCC, CE/UKCA, EMC) in partnership with Compliance and Quality.

Process & Engineering Excellence

  • Establish and enforce standards for schematic and layout reviews, firmware code reviews, version control, release management, and documentation.
  • Build out hardware-in-the-loop testing, unit test frameworks, build automation, and CI/CD for firmware.
  • Champion the use of AI across the embedded team to accelerate design, code generation, testing, and debugging, and define how we integrate it responsibly into our workflows.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field; MS is a plus.
  • 10+ years of embedded hardware and firmware experience, with 5+ years leading and growing teams that include both electrical and firmware engineers.
  • A track record of taking connected electromechanical products from prototype through production and sustaining them in the field at scale.
  • Experience taking electronics into high-volume production with overseas contract manufacturers, including DFM/DFT, NPI transfer, PCBA yield and quality issues, and on-site support at the CM.
  • Strong technical depth in board-level electrical design (mixed-signal, power, motor and actuator drive, sensor interfacing) and in embedded C/C++ on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems.
  • Experience with embedded Linux or Android (AOSP) platforms on SBC or SoM-based designs.
  • Hands-on familiarity with communication interfaces and protocols such as UART, I2C, SPI, USB, CAN, Ethernet, and wireless (WiFi, LTE, BLE).
  • Experience bringing products through regulatory certification (UL, FCC, CE/UKCA, EMC) and supporting international market entry.
  • Strong communicator who can hold their own with engineers in a design review and explain risk and tradeoffs clearly to executives.
  • Experience in food and beverage equipment, appliances, or other regulated consumer hardware is a plus.
  • Experience working in rapidly growing or scaling companies is a plus.
  • Ability to be in the office 3+ days per week.
