From the original posting

Bevi is on a mission to transform how beverages are delivered and consumed. Our connected beverage platform eliminates the need for single-use bottles and cans, making it easy, fun, and sustainable to stay hydrated. As the category leader in IoT-enabled beverage technology, we're building a future where Bevi machines are everywhere people live, work, and connect. We've raised over $160M in venture capital, serve thousands of customers across the US, Canada, UK and Ireland, and we've been rapidly growing year over year, saving over 1 billion bottles from waste. In addition to driving hypergrowth with our current product line, Bevi is heavily investing in new product development.

Bevi is looking for a Sustaining Embedded Systems Engineer to keep the electronics and firmware in our installed fleet healthy, reliable, and cost-effective. Thousands of connected Bevi machines are running in offices, campuses, and public spaces every day. When something goes wrong with a board, a sensor, a pump driver, or a firmware build in the field, you will be the person who finds out why and makes sure it doesn't happen again.

This is a hands-on, firmware-focused role for an engineer who is just as comfortable at the bench as in the code. You will root-cause field and factory failures, implement firmware fixes and drive electrical fixes with our EE team on products already in production, manage component obsolescence and second sourcing, and partner closely with our contract manufacturers to keep production running and yields high.

This role reports to the Director of Embedded Engineering, who owns your technical standards, career growth, and development. Day to day, you will work as a dotted-line member of the Sustaining team, which sets priorities for production and field issues and owns the cross-functional sustaining roadmap. You’ll operate in close partnership with Mechanical, Software, Quality, Manufacturing, Technical Services, and our contract manufacturing partners.

Your Day to Day

Field & Production Issue Resolution

  • Lead firmware and electrical root-cause investigations on field, factory, and returned-unit failures, using fleet telemetry, logs, failure analysis, and bench testing, and maintain DFMEAs that capture and prevent known failure modes.
  • Drive corrective actions to closure: define the fix, validate it, release it, and confirm it worked in the field.
  • Triage and debug boot, platform, communication, and system-level issues across our microcontroller boards and SBC/SoM platform to quickly reduce customer impact.
  • Support Technical Services and field teams with diagnostics, troubleshooting guides, and escalations on embedded issues.

Firmware & Electrical Changes on Released Products

  • Own firmware fixes and improvements for products in the field, from root cause through implementation, test, and release, following our code review, version control, and release processes.
  • Debug firmware, driver, and hardware-interface issues (peripherals, communication buses, timing, power states) using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, and bench setups, and turn findings into lasting fixes.
  • Debug and fix issues on our SBC/SoM platform running embedded Linux/Android, including boot, kernel, driver, and connectivity problems, and work with Software on platform releases.
  • Work with electrical engineering on board-level issues: read schematics, isolate whether a failure is in firmware or hardware, and propose circuit changes when the fix belongs in hardware.
  • Support ECOs through our PLM system when firmware or electrical changes affect released products.
  • Improve reliability, serviceability, and cost of existing products, and measure the impact of each change using fleet data.
  • Build and maintain internal tools that help diagnose, monitor, and control machines in the lab and in the field.

Component Lifecycle & Supply Continuity

  • Monitor component lifecycle and supply risk across our boards, and lead obsolescence, last-time-buy, and second-source qualification efforts.
  • Evaluate and validate alternate components, including electrical testing, firmware impact, and regulatory implications.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and our contract manufacturers to resolve shortages without compromising quality or compliance.

Manufacturing & Quality Support

  • Work directly with contract manufacturers (domestic and overseas) on PCBA yield, test failures, and process issues.
  • Support and improve end-of-line testing, test fixtures, and test firmware so problems are caught before they ship.
  • Partner with Quality on failure trending, NCRs, and CAPAs for electronics and firmware.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with the Quality and Sustaining teams on problem solving within the 8D framework.
  • Work with the Sustaining team to prioritize issues, communicate status, and flag risks and timing impacts.
  • Feed field learnings back to the Embedded and New Product Development teams so next-generation designs are more reliable from day one.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews for continuous improvement changes, clearly communicating risks, tradeoffs, and next steps.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation so critical knowledge never lives with a single person.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate debugging, code generation, log analysis, and documentation.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing and supporting firmware on connected electromechanical products, with meaningful time spent on products in production and in the field.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems (FreeRTOS a plus), with experience debugging drivers and hardware interfaces.
  • A track record of root-causing complex hardware/firmware failures and driving corrective actions to closure.
  • Comfort with lab and debug tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD debuggers, protocol analyzers, DMMs, power supplies, and data loggers.
  • Hands-on familiarity with communication interfaces and protocols such as UART, I2C, SPI, USB, CAN, Ethernet, and wireless (WiFi, LTE, BLE).
  • Solid board-level skills: reading schematics and datasheets, PCB bring-up and debug, and basic rework of SMT/TH components. Circuit design experience strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable with git and good software practices, including code reviews and release management.
  • Experience supporting ECOs in a PLM system and working with contract manufacturers on PCBA yield and quality issues.
  • Experience with component obsolescence management and second-source qualification.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (UL, FCC, CE/UKCA, EMC) and how design changes affect certification.
  • Strong communicator who can explain a failure and its fix clearly to other engineers, Quality, and Technical Services.
  • Experience with embedded Linux or Android (AOSP) on SBC or SoM-based designs is a plus.
  • Experience with Python or similar scripting for test automation and log analysis is a plus.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer) is a plus.
  • Experience in food and beverage equipment, appliances, or other regulated consumer hardware is a plus.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% to contract manufacturers and customer sites.
  • Ability to be in the office 3+ days per week.
