From the original posting
In 1949, as Diners Club tells it, Frank McNamara finished dinner in Manhattan and found his wallet at home in another suit. His wife came down and paid. He returned to the same table the following February and settled the bill with a piece of cardboard, honored at twenty-seven restaurants and carried by two hundred people, most of them his friends. A year later there were 42,000.
McNamara solved two problems at once. Acceptance: enough restaurants to make the card worth carrying, and enough diners to make it worth accepting. And credit: thirty unsecured days of it, on nothing but a signature. The networks settled acceptance decades ago. What is left is the credit, and the question of why someone carries this card rather than another one. That is this role.
Mercury is building its first consumer credit card. We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to define what it is, ship it, and grow it from a first cohort into a portfolio. The scope is the credit account itself: the acquisition and application funnel, the approval experience and the underwriting decisions behind it, how the line moves over time, what the rewards are worth, and the experience of carrying the account day to day.
Key responsibilities:
- Build a card people put at the front of the wallet and recommend without being asked
- Take the card from zero to launch: decide what ships first, and carry it through program setup and compliance sign-off
- Make the approval the clearest and fastest in the category: underwriting owns the model, you own the application, the wait, and the answer
- Own how customers experience their line: an increase that feels earned, a decrease that is explained
- Own the proposition we take to customers, from rewards and redemption to pricing, and understand the economics that fund it
- Set the craft bar: sweat the details, copy, disclosures, latency, empty states, that decide whether a card feels inevitable rather than adequate
- Drive the use of AI where it makes the experience meaningfully better: spend that makes sense at a glance, problems surfaced before they are noticed
- Make correctness and trust product features: own balances, interest, minimum payments, and statements that reconcile, and be measured on them
- Grow the business: own acquisition, activation, retention, and the loops that compound, starting with the businesses Mercury already serves
- Align the ecosystem: bring engineering, design, data, risk, compliance, legal, marketing, support, and partners behind one cohesive plan for the card
Some things that might make you successful in a role like this:
- A consumer product manager with taste: you have launched products people chose to use, and can point to the decisions that made them work
- 6+ years building consumer products, including at least one where money moved and errors were expensive
- Fluency in credit, or the capacity to acquire it fast: approval rates, line assignment, vintage curves, charge-off, interchange, and rewards liability
- An exceptionally high bar for craft, and a customer-centered, data-driven, and experimentation oriented approach
- You have shipped AI-led products to real consumers and have opinions about what AI makes possible and where it fails
- Exceptional cross-functional collaboration across engineering, design, data, risk, compliance, and partners
- Sound judgment in a regulated environment: you balance a delightful experience with the controls a credit product requires, and know which corners are never worth cutting
- Nice to have: card issuing, lending, or payments experience, and familiarity with Reg Z and the CARD Act
