From the original posting

We are rebuilding biotech for the AI era.

When a breakthrough is delayed, the world waits. Getting a molecule from discovery to patients, or a crop from lab to field, involves thousands of slow, manual, disconnected steps. AI has the potential to change this, compressing decades of R&D work into years. But that only happens when clean, structured scientific data and AI are built into how science gets done.

Benchling is the AI platform for biotech R&D. Scientists use Benchling to design experiments, capture structured data, and run AI agents and models directly in their workflows. Over 200,000 scientists around the world trust Benchling to power their most important work, from academic labs to Sanofi, Moderna, and more than half of the world's top 50 biopharma.

We’re building an AI scientist for our customers. We can’t do that if we haven’t built the muscle ourselves. AI fluency is the foundation we build on; it's core to how we work, and we're committed to helping every new hire integrate it into their day-to-day. As part of our interview process, you'll complete a brief AI-focused exercise or discussion so we can understand how you think about and use AI to drive impact in your role. Feel free to reference any tools, platforms, or workflows you use today.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Benchling is looking for a Revenue Manager to own key areas of our revenue accounting and Order to Cash functions in a high-growth SaaS environment. This is a hands-on individual contributor role built for someone who wants deep technical ownership: the deferred revenue process, the end-to-end allowance process, contract modification accounting, and the revenue implications of new AI-driven business models.

You will be a core contributor to the revenue close alongside the broader team, while carrying full ownership of your areas end to end. A significant part of this role is forward-looking: helping shape how Benchling recognizes revenue on consumption-based products and how we track and account for AI partnership economics as those models evolve.

If you are motivated by technical revenue accounting, cross-functional partnership, and building processes for products that do not have a settled playbook yet, we would love to meet you.

This role is based out of the San Francisco HQ and reports to the Head of Revenue Accounting. There are no direct reports, though you will help coach the revenue accounting team and review their work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the deferred revenue process end to end - deferred revenue, contract asset, and unbilled receivables schedules, rollforwards, reconciliations, and supporting analytics.

  • Own the allowance for credit losses from methodology through audit deliverable, partnering with Collections and Sales on customer risk, and own supporting memo.

  • Perform technical analysis for contract modifications, under ASC 606, and lead SSP analyses and complex revenue arrangement memos.

  • Lead or assist in AI and usage-based product initiatives - establish revenue recognition positions for consumption-based arrangements and build the tracking/reporting process for AI partnership fees.

  • Own professional services revenue (fixed-fee, T&M) end to end, and drive process optimization across PS revenue with Services Operations.

  • Prepare materials and present financial results in quarterly close presentations.

  • Own revenue and deferred revenue flux analyses across all streams, and participate in the monthly/quarterly/annual close for your workstreams.

  • Lead or assist on special projects such as new product and pricing model launches, entity or geographic expansion.

  • Owner for designated audit areas during the annual audit - managing PBC deliverables, resolving auditor inquiries, and driving issues to closure.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS/BA in Accounting, strong GAAP/GL/financial statement command. CPA strongly preferred.

  • 7+ years progressive revenue accounting experience in a SaaS/software company, with deep hands-on ASC 606 expertise including complex, non-standard arrangements.

  • End-to-end ownership of an allowance for credit losses or similar reserve process, including audit support.

  • High-growth SaaS experience spanning subscription and professional services revenue; public accounting/public company experience strongly preferred, IPO or first-year SOX a plus.

  • Track record owning SOX-compliant processes and driving automation - you've replaced a manual process with a scalable one.

  • Proficiency with NetSuite Advanced Revenue Management; advanced Excel/data skills.Familiarity with Salesforce CPQ.

  • Strong communicator who can influence cross-functionally without formal authority, and self-directed under close deadlines.

HOW WE WORK

We offer a flexible hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes in-office collaboration. Employees are expected to be on-site 3 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday).
